Welcome to Kefauver Farms, a livestock farm located in Clear Spring Maryland where we raise registered White Dorper and commercial Katahdin sheep.
Our goal is to produce a top quality product whether it be replacement stock for your farm or a delicious cut of lamb for your plate all while improving the overall health of the soil, plants and animals that we were entrusted to care for.
One of the ways we accomplish this is by practicing rotational grazing. Rotational grazing is a system in which livestock are regularly and systematically moved to fresh pasture approximately every four to six days with the intent to maximize the quality and quantity of forage growth. This also allows for a resting of the pasture of approximately fifteen to forty five days depending upon the time of year. Resting grazed lands allows the vegetation to renew energy reserves, rebuild shoot systems, and deepen root systems, with the result being long-term maximum biomass production. Rotational grazing is especially effective because sheep do better on the younger tender plants. Rotational grazing also leaves parasites behind to die off minimizing or eliminating the need for de-wormers. Pasture systems alone can allow the sheep to meet their energy requirements, and with the increased productivity of rotational grazing systems, the sheep obtain the majority of their nutritional needs without the supplemental feed sources that are required in continuous grazing systems. This system also allows us to produce a quality product while improving the overall health of the soil, plants and animals.
Please feel free to look around and thank you for visiting our website.
